Resources
The ICLCS uses open source, freely available computational resources. Curriculum produced by Fellows and their mentors will be available in the near future. Software applications include:
CSERD
The Computational Science Education Reference Desk (CSERD), is a Pathways project of the National Science Digital Library and funded by the National Science Foundation. It aim to help students learn about computational science and to help teachers incorporate it into the classroom. CSERD attempts to:
- Collect a catalog of quality resources from across the internet.
- Provide a forum for the Verification, Validation, and Accreditation of catalog items both by users and by expert reviewers.
- Create original computational science resources for use in education.
Vensim Simulation Software
Vensim is used for developing, analyzing, and packaging high quality dynamic feedback models. Models are constructed graphically or in a text editor. Features include dynamic functions, subscripting (arrays), Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis, optimization, data handling, application interfaces, and much more. Ventana Systems also provides the Molecules software, for constructing system dynamics models from "chunks" or molecules of system dynamics structure.
ACD/ChemSketch
ACD/ChemSketch is an advanced chemical drawing tool and is the accepted interface for the industry's best NMR and molecular property predictions, nomenclature, and analytical data handling software.ACD/ChemSketch:
-
Contains tools for tautomer prediction, 2D structure clean, and 3D optimization and viewing;
-
Includes IUPAC systematic naming capability for molecules with fewer than 50 atoms and 3 rings; and
-
Can be further customized by programming in a Basic-type language, ACD/ChemBasic
WebMO
WebMO is a free World Wide Web-based interface to computational chemistry packages. It features a variety of powerful enhancements that target towards users of large computer clusters, and allows WebMO to integrate with existing system-level queuing systems, accounts, authentication methods, and storage. A web-based interface provides of ease-of-use and a shallow learning curve for beginners. Advanced users benefit from convenience, full access to input and output, and management of computing resources.
Modern Science Modules
These modules have been developed for use in the classroom by the Intitute for Chemistry Literacy through Computational Science. They present fun ways to cover chemistry related topics such as molecular geometry, stoichiometry, electrochemistry, acids/bases, and many more.
Scientific Simulation Visualizations
Using a research-grade simulation package, Dr. Mashl has developed several visualizations illustrating fundamental physical chemical principles, such as dissolving of salt in water, the melting of ice, the separation of oil and water, and the encapsulation of oil by detergent.
