ICLCS Summer Institute will have a few openings for biology teachers in the summer of 2008. The format of the Institute is that attendees learn the use of computational tools and then work in groups to create curricular material. Since the focus of ICLCS is chemistry, the focus of the biological work will be the chemical basis of biology. In particular, each group of biology instructors will build materials around a biological issue, function, or disease where a single molecule has an enormous impact. Examples might be a genetic disease where a single mutation is the major cause of a disease (such as cystic fibrosis, or sickle cell disease) or a biological phenomenon where a single biological molecule has a major impact on biological systems and the environment (such as the photosynthetic reaction center that converts carbon dioxide to carbon in a form suitable for using in the synthesis of other biological molecules). The materials would explore the chemical principles underlying the function of the molecule and would then explore the biological context for the molecule's importance, thus providing a bridge between chemistry and biology.

We thank you for your interest in applying to this program. Please be sure to read all of the program information, including expectations and requirements, before completing this application. There are 6 sections in the application.
Note: We will be holding an “All Hands” Kickoff Meeting on April 19, 2008. Please “save the date” as all participants are expected to attend this important meeting.
Application Instructions
This application contains 6 sections that can be navigated with the use of the tabs (above). All of the sections of this application must be completed to the best of your ability. The different sections do not have to be completed in order, just so that they are completed when we receive your letter of
commitment. Make sure to press the save button at the bottom of any page to which you modify or add information.
If at any time you have questions regarding the program or application process, please contact: Diana Dummitt by phone: (217) 333-5198 or by email: ddummitt@uiuc.edu
Please ensure that all items are completed in the online application and all required signature documentation has been faxed to us.
Your application will be submitted to a committee of reviewers when you have filled out all sections and we have received the “commitment letter” from you and your school district. At that time, we will send you a confirmation e-mail. We will review your materials and notify you by e-mail and/or letter about the final status of your application. |
